The objective was to see the manufacturing industry&#8217;s pain-points from a customer&#8217;s view.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll take a look at the results and analyse the reasons behind them. Also, we summarise by bringing out how Fractory, as a manufacturing service provider, combats these issues.<\/p>\n<h2>The Burning Issues with Manufacturing<\/h2>\n<p>We used a poll instead of an open question to get more engagement. Firstly, it is very important to get insightful feedback on large orders. Minimal changes in production methods can lead to huge differences in total costs. Knowledgeable sales engineers can be of great help to customers.<\/p>\n<p>The other side is clients with small orders. Their queries often get neglected in an industry tailored for big money orders. A few people who have ended up as our clients have been on the verge of giving up on their production idea for that reason alone.<\/p>\n<h3>Long Quoting Times<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3646 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fractory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Time-is-money.jpg\" alt=\"Clock with a background of dollar bills\" width=\"640\" height=\"584\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fractory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Time-is-money.jpg 640w, https:\/\/fractory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Time-is-money-300x274.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>17%<\/strong> of people picked this as the most pressing issue.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Quoting is somewhat related to customer support. Sales engineers who are busy with ongoing work tend to leave new requests for quotes unnoticed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At the same time, a more underlying problem here may lay with the methods used for giving out quotes. A lot of the calculations are still done on Excel spreadsheets.<\/p>\n<p>Although a well-tested and reliable method, it takes a lot of time. With customers trying out new suppliers with small orders, the ROI on the allocated time is unknown. So sometimes those things are put on the back burner, resulting in days waiting for a reply.<\/p>\n<h3>Finding Quality Manufacturers<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3644 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fractory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Manufacturing-Issue-1.jpg\" alt=\"Subject to technical issues\" width=\"640\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fractory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Manufacturing-Issue-1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/fractory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Manufacturing-Issue-1-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of all the people voting, <strong>19%<\/strong> chose this option.<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of companies providing manufacturing services on a huge market. However, it may prove difficult to find one with the right expertise for a specific job. <a href=\"https:\/\/fractory.com\/aluminium-laser-cutting\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Laser cutting aluminium<\/a>, bending Hardox plates, ensuring flatness, etc. all require certain know-how.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, some mistakes are bound to happen with lots of work coming in. It&#8217;s just a matter of minimising it. Another challenge here is <a href=\"https:\/\/cerasis.com\/manufacturing-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">finding skilled labour<\/a>. A lot of the final quality depends on the machine operators. But how can you pinpoint companies that already have those people?<\/p>\n<p>Usually, it&#8217;s either through trial and error or good peer reviews. And when you finally find someone capable enough, you&#8217;ll stick with him.<\/p>\n<h3>Long Lead Times<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3649 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fractory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Long-lead-time.jpg\" alt=\"A skeleton sitting on a sofa\" width=\"640\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fractory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Long-lead-time.jpg 640w, https:\/\/fractory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Long-lead-time-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was the most popular answer, with <strong>43%<\/strong> of votes coming this way.<\/p>\n<p>Lead times are closely related to the last point. Once you find someone to trust, you&#8217;ll forward most of your queries in the same direction.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, long queues form at some doors. This often stretches lead times above 2 weeks from confirming the order to actual delivery.<\/p>\n<p>While doing industry research, we found out that manufacturing machinery sits idle for over 50% of the time. With this in mind, we can say that such lead times are pretty much unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, many companies in the industry may possess great technological capabilities and knowledge, but little marketing nous and are therefore difficult to find.<\/p>\n<h2>Solution to Manufacturing Troubles<\/h2>\n<p>When it comes to <strong>customer support<\/strong>, we acknowledge the power it has.
